Ages ago I won a Snowboard designing comp, and bought a snowboard to place my winning design on... but i decided that doing something new now would be a much cooler idea!!

This one is called Osaka Dreaming, and its an elaboration on a theme of a piece I did called Osaka Nights. Be it artist's evolution, be it evolution of a night.

Wow, its been so long since I've done a post here, where does the time go? I guess you could say i've been busy evolving! As an artist, when doors open to new places you walk though them, regardless of what is in the room and embrace it!

This one is called I'm Listening, for the new Red Bubble tee comp, which has the theme "Sound." The theme before was "London Calling" and I didn't promote it very well, you could say that is where the evolution began!

I’m so excited, and have been sitting on this news for a few weeks now.
I was contacted by Australian Bookmarks and Bookplates about purchasing some of my designs! Today they arrived!!!!!!!!! and i’m so thrilled to share them with you.

They are available in all the major bookshops in Australia NOW (I have been told the reps have been placing them instore already) and on the Australian Bookmarks and Bookplates website in the next few weeks for those outside Australia. I will let you know.

I’m so pleased with them, and so happy to say, I have achieved another one of my goals!

Lion Deck!

Hi Kids,
So I’ve been painting away yesterday and I’ve tracked my progress on how i go about it all.

Its no secret, I love lions!

Start with a pencil sketch, over an undercoat sprayed. These decks are stained in black, which is too deep to sand (with out sanding half the board away)

Place your flat colour

Start your “under strokes”.. my fav part, laying down your darks

More lights and details, stroke stroke stroke

A bit of a sand around the edges, and whiskers, more emphasis on the smaller details, etc etc… all done.

This was a little tricky with the paint as it didn’t absorb slightly like cardboard

Goodness me I have be so busy lately! Work keeps me out of trouble 2-3 days a week now, and sometimes it seems more than that.

I've been managing to keep up with what's going on in my head by continuing to paint. Its nice to rise above it all and get lost in a painting... this one I intend to place in a shop, in the hopes it will sell.

I did do this on cardboard a little while ago now, and it really works well on such a long narrow canvas. I plan to run with this concept a bit, and have some dusk colours, with a praying monk.

I've also been working on two other paintings, different to this style, and i've almost finished them, you'll have to keep watch around these parts for them. I will be selling one and keeping the other so I'm hoping my advice of "be ready to pounce" rings true.

Also, I've just registered a new website called www.gumballsushi.com where I plan to promote sushi, vector, tshirts, and of course thickblackoutline!! I only really started on the design of it today, so in a way I shouldn't've said anything at all! ;) Still exciting all the same - I have big plans in mind for it.

Saving the best for last, I'm dedicating this one to the man himself, Sir Willie "did you see his new header!!!" Baronet and our Creative Volley "Transcend." I think that the way I've been running of late, getting lost in work I wouldn't normally do (painting) is a such a nice break from the usual :)

TBO Mystery Prize Pack!

Very-excitingly, last month I ran a competition in my Red Bubble Vector Group, to come up with a Monster Mascot for the group!

One of the prizes was one of these thickblackoutline mystery prize packs, and this is a photo taken by the winner, Japu.

It all came in a white box, that had a bit of a rough ride from Australia to Itay, but all was not lost!

The pack includes some stickers, badges, magnets and moo cards! :) 3 were given out and each one was a little different!

So a little while ago, Zazzle added business cards and "profile cards" to their already cool collection of stuff.

On offer is a few different sized cards, the largest is similar to a playing card, or trading card in size. So I thought to myself, I have just got my new business cards, but what about a card that was big enough to really show off some artwork? And the artwork card was born, shown here on the right, with a postcard. I wanted to show the thickblackoutline philosophy off - which has been around from the beginning, so I had to ask myself, what sort of piece would encompass all of that? So here it is! :)

It's taken me a little while to catch up on this blog, what with me posting about it in all the other places.

I managed to source these cool hand made paper bags to paint on! they're only 10 x 7½ cms. Here I've taken a badge design and enlarged it for the bag.

This one is the Karma Geisha with a bit of collage, just like the last one. this was wasn't as tricky as i thought, being that small. and i've since got a new silver texta so look out ;)

I was asked to do some pirates for an upcoming project for a client, which had to me in "my style."

I always worry with delight, if a client says that... is what i think my style is the same as what they think?

As an experiment, i decided to just do this for fun, and for the sake of "this is what my style is" exercise, and it turns out its exactly what they want! wooooo!! This little gem took around 13 hours to do, check it out at Red Bubble here, and here on a tee.

More Moo and Badges!

Vectory Business

Long time readers of this blog, will know that I have been waiting for an opportunity to work on some new packaging for my badges - and the wait is partly over.

Today I received my moo cards, and I am able to star putting together badges and cards in this way :) I also have bagged sets of 3, which an appropriate card with them. I am expecting more badges on the way any day now, and will be having more designs put together as above, with the ones below. :) I'm not getting all of those cards as badges, and some will be used as a "generic" card.

I was shown this blog today, Floppy Disks get the Chop. It says "Today, 98% of all PCs in PC World have no floppy, or ‘A’ drive. It will be 100% by this summer."

Magnets on Zazzle

Just after Christmas I purchased some magnets of mine from Zazzle.

Here they are here, and these are 31mm in dia. I'm quite happy with these, but I should say that this isn't EXACTLY how they're represented on the site design wise. What appears on the site is slightly smaller than what you get, which i think is important to mention. They're passable, but be prepared if you were expecting something slightly different.

Yet, they are made really well, and the magnet nice and strong, etc etc. :) I would recommend them to any magnet lovers, or tbo lovers for sure! :) Check them out here.

This is an example of how my art my look, thanks to Cathie for doing this.

Here we have Dragon + Tiger which available only on Red Bubble - who is 1 today - yay!

This piece was a custom piece, for this very room, but there is also another version seen here.

Acrylic on Cardboard Box

Have been painting again over the last few days. I was having the "vector madness" so its good to take a break.

Did this one today, and have changed the colours in photoshop. Obviously cardboard box isn't aqua, and this was a big challenge to do a cat in its unnatural colours.

Going to be taking this one to a different level, with some collage and other applications - have been inspired today!

Biro

So instead of showing some current completed work, I thought I would show you something that I'm about to do!

There's much inspiration, while I live in a land where "patterns are in" as I suspected, and there are flowery luscious viney things everywhere. I find it rather handy to take some spy photos on my phone of the things that i like, and want to draw inspiration from.

There's nothing like just having your notebook handy, and a biro to really sort yourself out - there's no pressure its just what you keep meaning to do, and it all seems to flow so well.

Not going to tell you what i was inspired for this, and i'm not going to tell you what i'm going to do with this - mainly b/c i'm not quite sure - - here's hoping for an on the spot evolution!!

OK, not the best photo, but its the only one I got... have been working on my (physical A2) folio today, and i think these would be awesome stickers - but they're not.

I've used them here, just to pick up on the tshirt designs i've included photos of in my folio.

One day I'll get some stickers happening, how could i not?

Truffles

Was having terrible truffle trouble today!

Given it was very humid, my truffles were melting too much, and the melted chocolate would basically melt them more - so here we have some just coated in - drinking chocolate, coconut, nuts and brown sugar. Had to work quick, PLUS they had been in the freezer!!

Hope to perfect these one day, b/c they're so nice, and i love seeing all the different types, and making them too!

I've seen so many recipes for them the last few days, its really quite a crazy - this one is just with the chocolate and cream... but i've seen ones with cream cheese or butter too. I have made a few more types, but you'll just have to wait! ;)

Have just finished the third in this series, which really doesn't have a name, but I call it the "Bubble Series" just for the sake of it.

My idea of the "geisha pin up" which i've been working on these last few months has gained a lot of fans on RedBubble.

Here seen are (L-R) Yakuza Babe, Heat Treatment and now Sweet Nothings. Will keep travelling along with these, of course there are more colours I can work with for those bubbles! ;)

Recently, I had been out and about, taking note of the various designs, and patterns which seem to be "in" at the moment, and yes i was surprised (and delighted) to see that if its got a bird, and in particular a hummingbird, it was a good show.

So i thought, seeing as i'm a bit of a fan of patterns and the like, I would draw something in this light, but as a single panel. To be repeated and Vector-fied later... which is no surprise there ;)

Posters on Red Bubble

Thought I would share some of the delights I received in the mail last week.

I had been designing some Circus - Style Posters specifically for the launch of the posters on Red Bubble. The one here is called The Lion Tamer.

I'm always partial to the Oriental Coffee design, which is on the left.

The quality of these posters, which are A2 here, are outstanding! They have a smoother than coffee matte finish, which has to be seen to be believed!

Ah Zazzle you do it so fine!!

Zazzle is having a bit of a relaunch with all sorts of sparkling features. One of them being choose your own model for your clothes! :)

I'm quite partial to this Music Is Life, on a red tee - so effective! (thanks Darren) With these changes you'll be able to see how the design will bend and sit on the clothes, which is the way to go!

Vector Geniuses

In an effort to release ones self from the work that gets you down in this industry, I decided to start up a bit of a fun project.

I gathered together a few artists on Redbubble, who I felt that were not necessarily on the same page, but certainly in the same book as me, and started up a virtual band called Bubblerock!

Jamie Hewlett, the designer behind the Gorillaz, had the best gig in the world - yet to be replicated. Where is the rival band? So I thought it might be cool to have a different artist for each member, with a very concrete just-for-fun rule!

L-R we've got: Resisto, thickblackoutline, Mikoto, BigFatRobot, Tambatoys and Jumpy.

Currently we're just doing tshirts, with a view to do some group tshirts (I may have given the design of my group one away) tour tshirts, album tshirts, maybe some tour posters, diary entries from the road, blogs from the studio, etc etc.

I like fun! ;D

Promo! Promo!

L-R Patterns, Dragon Chef, Tea Party, Sushi, Maiko, Tea.

So i've been making up these little packs for promo. Each contains a Blank Card, with Envelope, Business Card, Badge, Stickers and a Moo Card.
I love bits and pieces!! I might design a unique top tag for each. These are limited to all the combinations I can make, which makes them a bit one-of-a-kind. Two if you're lucky. ;)

Recently I had been asked to contribute to the Artdictive Blog, and I made my first post the other day, a bit of a review about my Zazzle Postcards, Check it out here! :)

Also, I've started a new blog, Japanfluence. It is in conjunction with the Group I now moderate on Red Bubble of the same name. Every day, I post a picture, inspired by Japanese Culture - either from my personal stash, or from someone in the group.

Still all sorts to tell you, but they need their own post!! :)

Recently I got a little haul in of Cards from Red Bubble, and I've decided to share with you the ones that extra-impressed me.

The White Chocolate Star Cookies, is one of the ones I'll be using as a Christmas Card this year - - I like to have that sussed early! There are 2 versions of the cookies, the other here.

Saraswati, the Hindu Goddess of the Arts. I recently changed this series to suit the output a bit better, and I must say its come up a treat! There are only 2 of the goddesses on Red Bubble now, but the there's the whole set as postcards on Zazzle (with the info on the back.) I have some on the way.

Yakuza Babe, I actually wanted to see how those blues would go in the background, and its more than impressive I must admit! Like Saraswati, its nice and centered, which is quite a feat as its only cropped on 3 sides - I have it down now ;)

I have been asked to be a contributor on Artdictive.com! I'm going to be doing a bit more of an indepth review of the Zazzle Postcards (when they arrive.) Its always good to suss out the merch, and then pass it on.

Also, Season 2 of my badges is about to go live, I received some more stock today, and they are fantastic!! I'm still considering a few different options for the sale of the badges, but they are still available in my shop.

And, the 25 Sacks for Ya Back Exhibition opened today in Melbourne, so check it out if you're near Fitzroy!

The Hook

I'm going to be in an exhibition in Melbourne called 25 Sacks For Ya Back! It's all a part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival and this is my design that was accepted!

They're going to manufacture the bag like that green one - the theme was Melbourne All Over, and I think nothing says Melbourne more than a hook turn! ;)

The understanding of how to execute one pulses through every Melbournian's veins proudly!!

The exhibition runs from the 26th Sept - 14th Oct, at the Crumpler Fitzroy store. Be sure to check it if you're not geographically challenged - and take a photo for me :) I get the bag when its done, which is good b/c I really need a new one :D

Acrylic on Cardboard Box

yesterday i did a very nice lion friend... or was it the day before? today i've done this nice blue bird - would love to know what sort it is, I only had a picture.

So this time around i've managed to "remember" to take some scans at different stages, but once you get into it, there's really no hope of remembering - so i've tried my best. This one is having put the design down from a photo with carbon paper, and then painting all your flat areas of colour.

this one is all the flat colour down and just a quickie tree branch. after this stage, any recollection of "i need to scan this now" goes out the window. you can see i must've lent on it with my elbow! lol

here's a detail of our blue friend, i always feel like a bird is a bit harder, as they have no flowing fur. mind you, this is my second bird!!
